Weight Calculation: Pounds or Tons?

Fast-Weigh Web Portal

If you are a U.S. customer, you might notice a difference in how weights are stored between the Desktop Scale Application or Mobile Ticketing App and the Web Portal.

When you create a ticket or tare a truck from the Ticketing Application and the weight (in pounds) is uploaded to the Web Portal, you will see that the ticket weight is in tons on the Portal. We do a pounds-to-tons conversion when the Portal receives tickets from the Ticketing App.

The reason we store weights as tons on the Web Portal is twofold:

  • All raw ticket data stored in the Fast-Weigh cloud must use units of measure that are universal between all of our customers, and the metric system is universal.
  • Tons allow us to save space. Numbers can get extremely long when you're calculating all the pounds hauled for a whole month or more, and this could take up a ton (pun intended) of space when you try to view your ticket data.
Remember: On the Web Portal, weights are always stored in tons. On the ticketing app, weight can be in either pounds or tons, depending on your settings.

If you are in the U.S. and you are taring or ticketing a truck from the desktop ticketing application, the weight is pulled directly from the scale via the weight indicator. Most weight indicators in the U.S. measure in pounds, but you can change the unit of measure to tons in the app settings if needed.
When adding a tare to a truck from the Portal, you will need to do the conversion yourself since you're inputting a tare manually. Thus, a truck with a tare of 26,260 pounds should be tared on the Portal as 13.13 tons.
